It’s a natural part of who we are as humans. We get easily distracted and consumed by the everyday questions of life. Where are we going to eat? Does this clothing fit our style? Are we financially ready for what’s next? What does our future hold?
Once we begin to follow Jesus, those questions become secondary. With Jesus as our Savior on earth, God becomes our Father in heaven. Knowing that our perfectly good Father will provide our daily necessities, we are freed to seek his kingdom first.
If we primarily pursue God’s righteous standards, then we will confidently enjoy his gracious provision. Ironically, those who are more mindful of heaven become more impactful on earth - an impact that bears the distinctive marks of God’s authority and our obedience.

We join God’s glorious kingdom the moment we trust Jesus as our exalted King. Along with establishing God’s perfect standard for his subjects, Jesus exercises his sovereign authority as our Lord. That authority, especially apparent through his miraculous works, affirms Jesus’ right to rule over us and empowers our will to submit to him.
To truly seek God’s kingdom on earth, we must consistently set our minds on heaven. That’s precisely where Paul directs our attention: having been raised with Christ, we ought to elevate our perspective to God’s right hand—where Jesus is seated (Colossians 3:1-2). Ironically and providentially, the more preoccupied we are with God’s heavenly priorities, the more impactful we become in our earthly pursuits. Writing from the inside of a prison, Paul envisions this glorious freedom of our new life in Christ.

Jesus loves telling stories that are down to earth. A neighbor lovingly cares for a total stranger in dire need. A father waits patiently for his wayward son to return home. A just-terminated employee devises a brilliant plan that prepares for his future. Invited guests miss the best banquet ever with lame excuses. Through these intriguing and often surprising stories, Jesus masterfully and memorably presents kingdom snapshots (parables) that inspire us to manage our daily responsibilities through the lens of God's eternal priorities.

While we underline the relational aspect of our knowing God personally, following Jesus wholeheartedly, and embracing the Spirit daily, it does not diminish the presence of rules that express heaven's standards. In a word, God expects obedience to his commands. The Ten Commandments that Moses originally delivered to the nation in the wake of God's supreme act of mercy still affirm the benchmarks of what we must do as a redeemed community.

Already tasting the benefits of what Jesus accomplished through his incarnation, crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension, we anticipate the ultimate wedding feast when our exalted King comes again in the fullness of his glorious power. So as we relish the joy of our Lord's first coming, let's also cherish the hope of his soon return by praying for the hallowing of his Father's name and the coming of our Savior's kingdom (Matthew 6:9-10).
